What Kind of Media Institution Might Distribute Your Media Product andWhy?

Film distribution is the process of making a movie available for viewing by an audience. Whilst I chose to use YouTube as a distribution platform for my film opening, in big budget films they can be distributed within the cinema, television or even personal home viewing. YouTube can be a very successful platform for releasing content for others to watch but often does not have the support of a film distributor etc.

More recently independent film-makers on YouTube have been getting attention from directors and people who are able to fund them through making their videos. Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s new form digital to fund 14 short films from YouTube creators. Some of these film-makers included Sawyer Hartman, Bertie Gilbert and PJ Liguori. The short films will all be distributed through each partner’s YouTube channel, with the possibility of extended content deals and expanded distribution across global platforms if successful.

My film could be produced and distributed on YouTube by a company such as New Form Digital and still have the chance to further be developed or distributed by more traditional distributors also.
An alternative to a company so modern and digital media oriented, is Film4. Film4 distributes many films and is also keen on keeping up to date with the use of traditional media, digital media, new platforms and the real world. In Order to submit a film to Film4 you must submit a proposal through either a registered production company (i.e. companies with a history of films that have been produced and officially distributed either theatrically or at a festival) or an agent.
Channel 4's 4Talent scheme runs for opportunities for new writers, for which you don't need representation or a track record, this allows new creators to try and make it into the industry without a pre-existing production company or agent.
