Crime - thriller identifying traits

Crime - Thriller is a sub-genre of of crime films. this sub-genre is a combination of typical crime films and thriller. the plot often revolves heavily around the hunt of a serial killer and the pursuit of a detective trying to track down the criminal. examples of this dynamic between the murderer and detective are BBC2 series The Fall which features actor Jamie Dornan as a serial murder and Gillian Anderson as a detective. The drama follows the events of both of their lives, only to intertwine and for the protagonist and antagonist to come directly into contact towards the end of the series.

Below is a list of identifying traits of a Crime - Thriller which we will need to include within our opening sequence in order to make it successful.

  • The intentions of the antagonist must initially be more cunning and complex than the protagonist's.
  • The main plot focuses on a mystery that needs to be solved.
  • There is a suspenseful and atmospheric soundtrack for a large majority of the scenes.
  • The characters must seem realistic to the viewer to ensure that it is relatable.
  • The protagonist and antagonist will both face trouble and have to overcome issues which may be physical as well as mental.
  • The use of both action and psychological aspects to build tension and suspense.
