Summer Project - Recreation of Rue's Death Scene

For our summer project we were told to choose a scene from an action film and recreate it. I chose to do Rue's death scene from The Hunger Games.

Analysis of film extract recreation – Rue’s death scene

The scene which I have chosen to replicate is Rue's Death scene from the Hunger Games. The narrative of the scene is the death of Rue and Katniss taking particular care to look after her even after her death. The way she mourns for Rue who had become an alliance to Katniss within the film, right down to the careful placement of the flowers is delicate and challenges the nature of the games. The music used within this scene intensifies the emotions and is quite subtle at the beginning. The first track 'Booby Trap' creates tension as Katniss searches for Rue and tries to free her from the net, the next song I have used is 'Rue's Farewell' and it starts just as Rue has been hit by the spear.

The colours used within the scene all tie in together and are very earthy tones, the flowers are placed around Rue as a symbol of humanity and to honour Rue's very short life are white which signifies purity. When the camera is showing the heart-breaking moment of Rue’s death from the very long shot it is clear how innocent she truly was. I tried to make the lighting an important factor of the mise-un-scene within this scene and to make it as light as possible despite it being in a forest because this signifies the fact that their surroundings are fake and controlled. For the majority of the scene I chose to cut between frames as this meant that it was quite fast paced and made the action flow better. Between the shots in which Katniss is picking the flowers and placing them around Rue I used the cinematic transition because it made the transitions between angles very gentle and fitted with the mood that I wanted to create. I also faded Katniss singing the lullaby to Rue to white because this angle was from Rue's point of view and as she passed away her surrounding fade with her.

After Rue's death it cuts to a medium shot of Katniss in clear distress. The fact you can see Katniss screaming, overcome with grief but only hear the track in the background signifies how disconnected she has become from her surroundings as she has lost the only person who she felt she could truly trust within the arena. The fact that Rue's jacket is open is very important because when Katniss does up the zip to cover the wound it shows her caring instinct and the fact that she really saw Rue as a little sister almost. At the very end of the scene when you see Katniss begin to stand the angle feels very false because it is taken from above them whereas the other shots which are almost eye level and make you feel as if you are a part of the even as it unfolds, this shot is made to look like a security camera watching over the two characters. Katniss makes a three finger salute towards the camera, this shows that she has been aware of the fact she is being watched for the duration of this scene but has not let it distract her.
