When creating my logo I have looked at other brand logos and how they are successful in giving across the message they intend and how they are memorable. I have included three stars within my logo which are increasing in size. These stars represent reaching for the stars and the increasing size of the stars represents how I would want my production company to grow within itself.
I have chosen to use only black and white for my logo because these colours are very bold and are perceived as quite mature colours, I definitely want my production company to be seen as mature and to reach an audience which are looking for films which are well put together and they will be able to watch with ease. The demographic of my target audience is teens and young adults; I am aiming to be gender neutral within my filmmaking process. The black and white colours are very gender neutral and mean that I won’t be narrowing my audience as soon as they look at the logo.
The name of my production company is ‘DW Media’ as these are my initials and I think that it is quite an easy name for a person to remember and be able to come back to at a later date if they so wish to. The fonts which I have used are Adobe Carlson Pro Bold for the ‘D’ and the ‘W’ as these are the two parts which I want to stands out the most and I have used Adobe Carlson Pro for ‘Media. I have chosen this font because in my opinion it seems a little bit retro which is quite popular at the moment and gives the company a feel of being established for a while which could attract viewers who look for films which have a good reputation. Companies like Disney have very iconic logos and people remember them for the quirky elements, the ‘D’ in the Disney logo is written in a swirly font which is iconic and this works because Disney is such a well established company which have brand loyalty from their customers. I have not used any lettering which could be difficult to read as my production company may take some time to become well known and I would not want people mistaking the name for anything else.
My logo is circular and I took quite a while to make this decision. Nike have the swoosh tick and logos which have unique shapes which are easily recognisable can work very well for companies and being the symbol for it to be remembered by. After taking this into consideration I felt that a circular logo would be best for my company. The circle would make people think that DW Media is well rounded and it would be good to include on any merchandise, Starbucks are a very good example of a company with a circular logo and they showcase how effective the rounded style can be on many types of merchandise and publications. The circle appeals to the logical side of our brains so people will be drawn to logo without necessarily realising it straight away. The cross within the centre of the logo contrasts with the circle and your eyes are immediately drawn towards the centre where the title of the company and the three stars are positioned.
I made my logo within Photoshop and I made it quite large so that when it comes to enlarging the logo the quality of it will still be crisp and none of the detail would be lost. The background of the logo is clear so that when it is places on DVD cases or on websites there would not be a white square around the circle making it look unprofessional. The colours I have used are very bold and the logo shows at a glance who we are as a company.
My inspiration for the three stars which I have used in my logo is the quote ‘reach for the stars’. This quote is very simple but it is one which I try and stick to in order to do the best that I can in everything I try, if I can encompass these morals within DW Media then I know that it will be a successful company with content which I am very proud of. I have taken inspiration for the logo from various places such as existing companies like Starbucks for the shape, the simplicity from companies like Apple and the slightly retro style from photos on websites like Etsy and WeHeartIt because I know that these brands are all very popular with my intended target audience.
